The Habit Loop

Willpower fades. Environment wins.

The Habit Loop

Cue, craving, response, reward — and back around. Change one link and the whole pattern changes.

The core ideas

Your brain builds the habit before your body does.

Every habit runs the same loop: a cue, a craving, a response, a reward — and then around again. You don't have to smash the loop. You just have to change one link in it.

Willpower fades; environment wins.

Don't rely on being strong at six in the morning. Rely on having made it easy. Put the running shoes by the door and let the room make the decision for you. The strongest people aren't the ones with the most discipline — they're the ones who needed the least of it.

Notice the cue.

You cannot break a loop you've never actually seen. Awareness comes before change, always. For one week, don't try to fix anything — just catch the moment the craving starts. That alone begins to loosen it.

Small, repeated, on purpose.

You don't need to overhaul your life by Friday. You need to be a little better today than you were yesterday, and then do that again. That's how the loop rewires — quietly, daily, on repeat.
