The Pause
Response builds bridges. Reaction builds walls.
Between the feeling and the action there's a pause. That's the only place you actually get a choice.
The core ideas
Between feeling and action, there's a pause.
You don't choose the feeling. It arrives on its own. But what happens next is entirely yours — and it happens in a gap most people never notice is there. That pause is where your power lives.
The hardest sentence is "I could be wrong."
It's also the one that builds the most bridges. Being right is cheap; being close to someone costs something. Most arguments aren't a disagreement about facts — they're two people defending themselves at the same time.
Ask the second question.
"I'm fine" has never once meant fine. Curiosity is a form of love, and most people are only ever asked once. Ask again, and then be quiet long enough for the real answer to show up.
Forgiveness is mostly for you.
Carrying it costs you far more than it costs them. Forgiveness isn't saying it was okay, and it isn't always reconciliation. It's putting down something heavy that you've been hauling for a long time.
